>
Race is a 5 month old male border collie X australian shepherd. He is the biological brother of Jess, who was available for adoption a couple of months ago. Race is a stunning red merle who comes to us by way of Saskatchewan, where he and Twist were chasing cattle so needed to move pronto. Race was more than likely the ring leader, as he is a busy pup with an independent streak, always ready for action at a moment's notice. This pup is a going concern!

Despite Race's busy nature, he is also a very sensitive dog and raised or angry voices cause him to roll over on his back - if I scold any of the other dogs in the house, I'm sure to see Race's legs all waving in the air submissively, as he is worried about being the one in trouble. He responds the same way if you grab his collar and try to manipulate him into doing something. It's very sad to see such an enthusiastic and rambunctious pup so worried about his safety, so for this reason he is best in a home with someone who both really likes challenging an intelligent and active dog on a regular basis, but does so with positive training methods and confidence building. Once Race gets over being worried about upsetting someone, he would be an awesome candidate for a sport like agility - he is athletic and fast and super flashy as an added bonus.

Like many Ausies, Race has strong sense of independence and while he is SUPER cuddly and likes nothing better than sitting in someone's lap, he also likes to make his own decisions and it's not uncommon for me to see Race disappearing down my dead end road in search of something interesting, so a secure fence is a must for Race. Of the two pups, he is the pushiest and often wants to eat Twist's dinner as well as his own. He is generous about sharing toys, but will sometimes guard food items from other dogs, and while he is respectful of the adult dogs when they are fair, he is not afraid to stand up for himself if he thinks an adult dog is taking advantage. When he gains some confidence, Race will be a lot of dog, so don't think he is a squishy softie and don't be fooled by his submissive rolling.

Race loves to play with other dogs, but my cats do not like him as he pounces on them and takes offense to their spitting and hissing. He is best in a home without cats, or with very dog savvy cats. Because I think Race will be a somewhat bossy guy as he matures, he is best in a home without young children.

Race is crate trained and housebroken, but if something fits in his mouth he will chew on it, and I have already lost some shoes, carpet edges and a chair to his explorations. It is normal for puppies to chew on stuff, and Race is just a little behind in learning what is "good" to chew and what isn't because he was raised in a barn.

Before adoption Race will be neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tattooed. This will happen in the next couple of weeks. He is very healthy and very good food motivated, which is great for training. He will be a fair sized dog, with the Aussie chest and shoulders, but he has a shorter coat - however, it can mat up so regular grooming is required.

Proof of enrollment in a positive obedience class is necessary for your application to be considered. We prefer to see Race in a home with someone who wants to try dog sports, and who understands busy, pushy dogs - Race is not a puppy for a first time or novice dog owner. He is going to be a stunning adult dog, but first we need to get him through the "terrible twos" :)

We can be reached at bcrescue@shaw.ca . PLEASE NOTE: TDBCR does not
adopt dogs out sight unseen. We do not ship our dogs. Our dogs are
located in the province of British Columbia CANADA, mostly in the Lower
Mainland. We do consider adoptions out of area / across the border, but
applicants are required to come to BC to meet us and meet the dog in
question. Thank you for understanding.

His foster home is working hard to curb and redirect his interest in cars and is seeing a slow but steady improvement. His foster home will work with his new owner to continue this education, but if you apply for Raleigh, we want to know how you think this would be best handled and how you would go about correcting his interest in cars.

Raleigh would benefit from an obedience class as a way of bonding with his new person and getting that foundation we spoke of earlier. Fortunately, Raleigh is excellent with other dogs and has good k9 communication skills. He would make an excellent buddy to another friendly dog, as he enjoys socializing and playing with other dogs. Because of his car fixation, he is not yet a candidate for off leash parks that are not securely fenced.

Raleigh is learning how to play with toys and likes to tug, and is developing an interest in fetch. He would do best in an active home with someone interested in trying a dog sport, maybe like agility, to keep his body and brain active. He is a high energy dog. As Raleigh can be possessive of his "stuff" he should not go to a home with children under about 15 years of age.

Raleigh has a thick coat that may shed out now that he is an inside dog, but his new owner should expect to do some grooming to keep him tangle-free. He is a busy dog, so would not suit a sedate person. Because of his interest in cars, a securely fenced yard is a must for Raleigh - he does not enjoy spending time outside alone, and like all of our dogs, must be mainly indoors.

Raleigh is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. While we feel is about ready for a new home, his new owner should be prepared to transition him over with the help of his foster home, and continue the training and redirection they have started with him. His new owners must be committed to keeping Raleigh safe and providing him with a rich environment where he will get the exercise, training and attention he needs and craves. Aussies are very loyal dogs and Raleigh is no exception - he will be your very best friend!

We can be reached at bcrescue@shaw.ca . PLEASE NOTE: TDBCR does not adopt dogs out sight unseen. We do not ship our dogs. Our dogs are located in the province of British Columbia CANADA, mostly in the Lower Mainland. We do consider adoptions out of area / across the border, but applicants are required to come to BC to meet us and meet the dog in question. Thank you for understanding.

>
Simba is a very floofy Australian Shepherd mix who was born in April 2008, so she is just over 2 years old. She is currently a little under weight at about 50lbs and will be on the larger side when she puts on some muscle and weight. She is also shedding out her cold climate coat but will still be a fluffy dog who may require regular brushing to keep her tangle-free.

She was surrendered to and adopted from a shelter but the adopters did not have the time to meet her training and exercise needs, so she was then surrendered to rescue. It never fails to amaze us that dogs as lovely as Simba go through homes like this, as she is a very lovely animal with tons of potential for the right person. We hope to find that person for her.

Simba was described as being fearful and shy with people, but we have found her to be only somewhat reserved with people she does not know, which is not unusual for the Australian Shepherd breed. Boisterous and loud/"large" (as in personality, not size) people frighten her, and her default behaviour is to retreat and hide from that scary person. However, with most people she meets she is pleasant and just a little standoffish. She is not overly shy or overly nervous, and time and consistancy in a new home will give her more confidence.

Simba is one of those dogs that can get ANY dog to like her right away and she is having a great time playing with her foster brothers, who were both charmed by her immediately. She would make an excellent companion to an existing dog because she is so dog social. Another well trained dog would be a bonus for Simba, because she would benefit greatly from training she has not yet received and she can take her cue for things like a recall from another dog. Simba is housebroken and has a grasp on basic obedience commands. Her new owners will need to take her to a positive obedience class to speed the bonding process. Simba can and will go "walkabout" if she spies an open door or gate, so a securely fenced yard and a home with no small children (who leave doors open accidentally) is a must for Simba. We do not know how she is with cats, buit she is enthusiastic about chasing and eating rabbits and mice.

Simba needs a quiet home, but not a lazy one - she is very energetic and appreciates her daily off leash runs along the dykes where she can wrestle with her foster siblings and indulge in some light hunting. In the house she enjoys playing with toys or her foster brothers. She is a good housedog who likes to nap on furniture, and is affectionate with her people, often soliciting pats, but not overly pesty. She is not noise sensitive or reactive, but responds poorly to harsh tones (she shuts down). A sensitive handler is best for Simba.

This cutie is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped and has been declared healthy by the vet. She is an easy going gal who just was in the wrong homes in the first part of her life - she is looking for the right home where she can blossom! Her foster home is totally charmed by her, and we think you will be too.

We can be reached at bcrescue@shaw.ca . PLEASE NOTE: TDBCR does not

>
Kimby is a blue merle "mini" Australian Shepherd with two blue eyes. She is as very small dog, standing just 12" at the shoulder and weighing just under 20lbs. Unlike a regular size Aussie, Kimby is laid back and not particularly energetic, and would be fine for someone who wants a companion to hang out with and take for daily walks.

Kimby's owner was no longer able to care for Kimby when he was moved into a full-time care-facility following surgicial complications. Kimby's extended family has taken her in, but they feel she would be best in a home with someone who can devote a lot of time and attention to Kimby, who is very peple-focused and loves one-on-one time with her person. She would be an excellent companion to an older retired person, or someone who works from home and enjoys having a canine pal nearby. Kimby is a small dog who has always lived with adult persons, and therefore would not appreciate living with small children.

Like most Aussies big or small, Kimby has a mind of her own. She responds best to a positive, motivating training style and would not appreciate a heavy handed or forceful person. She is crate trained, housebroken, rides nicely in the car and walks well on a leash. She is content with a daily constitutional and would not be a good candidate for dog sports or other high octane activities.

Kimby has not lived with cats and her previous owners think she may not like to either, but we can't say for sure. Kimby lives with two other dogs currently, but is best as only dog. She could adjust to living with another canine after proper introductions and monitoring, but her new owners would have to be willing to see that process through as it would be a rocky start. Kimby is fearful of other dogs in general and so is not a candidate for dog parks or other areas where there are large concentrations of dogs.

Although Kimby is a small, not very active dog, she is not a lap dog - and while she would be good for a senior person, that person should be well versed in canine body language and training so that her Aussie brain doesn't take over the household. Kimby is much more than an ornament or toy.

Kimby is missing her owner and would love a home of her own soon.

Kimby is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. She is in good health but has had several teeth extracted over the years so her new owners should stay on top of her dental care. A fenced yard or outdoors on-leash only is mandatory for Kimby.

We can be reached at bcrescue@shaw.ca . PLEASE NOTE: TDBCR does not

>
Pretty Belle is a 9 year old border collie mix, possibly with a bit of lab or a touch of something else. She has a smooth, easy care coat and a solid, stocky build. Belle was adopted by her previous owners at the age of about 5 years, but in the meantime they added a baby to their household and as that baby turns into a toddler, Belle made it clear that she was not safe with small kids. Belle seems to be fine with kids she meets casually, ie on the street or in the park, but the stress of living with children is too much for this middle aged lady, who appreciates her peace and creature comforts. They were sad to give Belle up because they love her charming ways, but it was not possible to have Belle and a toddler in the same house without stressing Belle out by keeping her isolated from the child.

Belle has lived with another dog and currently lives with two foster 'siblings'. She has been fine with the male dog, but has gotten into it with the female - no damage done, but Belle would rather not live with another female dog. At the park, Belle can be a little bit reactive to dogs who are moving quickly or who get in her face but her foster home has worked hard with her and Belle can now go to the off leash dog park daily. She is better with other dogs off leash than she is on, and will move away from a dog that is bothering her in order to avoid them. She can also get the bulk of her exercise from daily walks, and she is not a really high energy dog.

Belle likes to chase things like cats and squirrels, so should probably not live with small animals. She would make an excellent addition to an adult home with someone who is looking for a companion for walks and someone to snuggle with on the sofa.

Belle has a sensitive stomach and seems to thrive best on a raw food diet of mainly meat. This diet is not difficult and raw food is available in many pet supply stores - her diet is simple and she has a healthy appetite.

Belle has been to the vet and declared healthy and in great shape for a dog of slightly advanced years. Belle bonds strongly with her human and wants nothing more than a soft place to hang out with someone who loves her. It's very hard on these older dogs to get bounced around through no fault of their own.

Belle is probably not a candidate for an apartment as she does bark when she is left alone - not excessively or very loudly but with some regularity. She would make a great dog for a retired person.

Belle is spayed, vaccinated and tattooed. She is crate trained, housebroken and a lovely dog for the right person. She is loyal, affectionate and rides quietly in the car. We know she is not as flashy as some border collies, and she is not a sport candidate, but she is a loyal friend and that counts for a lot. If you can be a loyal friend to Belle in return, please contact us about meeting this lovely lady.

We can be reached at bcrescue@shaw.ca . PLEASE NOTE: TDBCR does not

>
Lucky Luke looks like a big grown up dog, but he is really just an 1 year old puppy who is on the larger side of average. He currently weighs about 55lbs and will likely end up somewhere around 65lbs when he is full grown. He's a lot of dog physically, but he's not a super energetic dog. Folks experienced with border collies may find him on the lower end of the demanding scale, whereas other dog folk may find him a little more active. We think he's mainly just a goofy puppy :)

Luke was surrendered by owners who realized they had purchased more dog than they had time for. Left to his own devices in the yard, Luke was irritating the neighbors by complaining about his lonely lot in life. When he was brought inside, he had no house manners to speak of and then he irritated his owners! Fortunately, Luke is a smart puppy and since he has been in foster care he has been crate trained, house broken and is learning things like "no counter surfing" and other essential housedog skills. But he is still a puppy, and house living is new to him, so patience must be exercised and guidance offered so he can continue his education.

Luke is learning some other important skills too, such as walking politely on a leash, and most importantly, greeting strangers. Luke did not get out much in his previous home, and as primarily a yard dog he was encouraged to 'protect' his property. Luke is a big softy who would never follow through, but he does bark at people who come into his home, and like many dogs who are undersocialized, he seems to be more nervous about strange men. Because he is a large dog, meeting strangers is a skill that is important for Luke to learn because he could be intimidating to people otherwise. He has come a long way in foster care and is already much more relaxed about strangers - he will only continue to improve with a patient handler who keeps him on track.

Luke lived with older children in his previous home, but we don't know how he would be with very young kids. Because of his large size and puppy-manners, we would suggest he is not suited to a home with toddlers as he is likely to knock them over or frighten them with his barking. We have no idea how Luke is with cats, but he did not live with any in his last home.

Luke LOVES water and can be found where ever bodies of water are available for splashing in or laying in or just generally enjoying. He does not yet swim, but we suspect he'll start pretty soon. He loves to run off leash in safe areas, but he still needs some work on his recall, like many puppies, before he is reliable off leash.

Luke has excellent doggie skills - he has gone to daycare and out with dogwalkers and he enjoys romping with other canines. He gets on well with the several dogs in his foster home, and is polite with the neighbour's very small dogs. He is very appropriate with other dogs and would make a great companion to another playful and friendly dog.

Luke was adopted and returned because his owners did not set up him for success in his meet and greets with new people. He needs owners who recognise and respect his stranger-danger issues and are willing to work with him slowly and not take him over threshold too quickly. His foster homes have really enjoyed him and his progress, and we know someone else will too.

It can be difficult to think of Luke as a puppy because he's quite a size, but at just a year old like any puppy he needs guidance, training, patience and time from his new home. Luke has lots of potential to be an excellent companion dog to someone who looking for a medium energy buddy. Luke is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and ready for a home of his very own.

We can be reached at bcrescue@shaw.ca . PLEASE NOTE: TDBCR does not

>
TWIST HAS AN ADOPTION PENDING AND IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST!

Twist comes to us from Saskatchewan, where she and her adopted "brother" Race were chasing cattle on a farm and needed somewhere else to go real fast. She is the product of a border collie X australian shepherd mother, and a catahoula mix father. She is a smallish, fine boned, smooth coated female with an attractive merle coat and houndy ears. She was born in January of this year and just over 7 months old.

Twist is a very soft female dog, soft meaning her temperament, not her coat (although that is soft also!). She is nervous about upsetting her handler and crumbles under harsh language or loud, angry voices. Raised in a barn, she did not get much socializing with people but has a sociable, friendly personality anyway and loves to cuddle with just about anyone who is kind to her. Twist flattens herself to the ground when her collar is grabbed, and will run to her crate if she thinks you are upset. She is a sensitive dog, who would do best with an R+ handler who is not going to shut her down with military style commands and leash corrections. She is not pathlogocially shy, and regular socializing will overcome her early beginnings, because she has a naturally friendly temperament. She is less a project dog and more a blank slate, with a little emphasis needed on positive touching and handling.

Twist is excellent with other dogs, respectful of adults and sociable with puppies. She is gentle and inquisitive, but not pushy with my cats who enjoy greeting her several times a day. Because she is so sensitive, she is probably best in a home without loud or rambunctious children, but would be fine in a home with older, quieter kids. No toddlers please, due to her sensitivity about being grabbed.

Of the two pups, Twist is more likely to hang out with people and seek attention, but she does have a hound's nose and a good smell can cause her to wander off, so a secure fence is necessary for her own safety. She loves to play with other dogs and when she has a good recall would be an excellent candidate for the off leash park. However, she has no training on her at all at this time, so her new owner should be prepared to take her to a positive obedience class to get those foundations underway. Proof of enrollment will be a requirement for adopting Twist.

Twist, like all puppies, is fairly active, but she is not a "high drive" dog and is quite laid back for her age, though some of that may be due to her shyness. Her energy level may increase as her confidence does, but I do not think she will ever be a go-go-go kind of dog. She'd make an excellent companion dog.

Twist is housebroken, and crate trained, but like all puppies she requires monitoring in the house as she will chew on inappropriate things and needs guidance and supervision. We would prefer to see her in a home where she will not be left alone for long hours every day, as she will gain confidence more quickly if her new owner can spend lots of time getting her out and about in the world.

Twist will be spayed, tattooed and microchipped before adoption, and she is up to date on vaccines and dewormed. As she has just arrived, it will be a week or two before we take care of this, so please be patient. She is in excellent health and is a lovely, snuggly puppy who will excell in the right hands.

We can be reached at bcrescue@shaw.ca . PLEASE NOTE: TDBCR does not

>

CIRQUE HAS AN ADOPTION PENDING AND IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST!

Cirque is a female Australian Shepherd X Jack Russell Terrier and is about 2.5 years old. She is a medium sized dog standing about 19" at the shoulder and weighing about 35lbs. She has an athletic physique, a short wiry blue merle coat, and a funny little bobbed half tail that is often wagging. Cirque gets her name because she is a bit of a clown, but a graceful one, and she is a stunning looking dog!

Cirque was a backyard dog owned by an indifferent family who was moving, and opted not to take her with them. Fortunately for Cirque, she was befriended by a caring neighbour who recognized her immense potential and took the time to bring her to training classes and give her regular exercise before contacting TDBCR. The result is that Cirque is a well trained dog with a solid grasp of obedience and a bright brain that learns new behaviours very quickly. As a combination of two challenging breeds, she can be a bit pig-headed, but responds beautifully to positive motivation and praise/reward.

Being an Aussie mix, Cirque has a natural reserve with strangers, men in particular. However, she is not aggressive and practices mainly avoidance, and is easily won over in a matter of seconds with a liver cookie and a kind word. As Cirque meets more and more people, her reserve will diminish, as she is a very sociable dog, but she will probably never be an in-your-face friendly lab-type dog. She is very affectionate with her person and generally has eyes only for that individual, and this kind of focus makes her an excellent candidate for sports like agility. Combined with her natural athleticism and stunning good looks, she'd make a flashy partner on the course.

Cirque has never lived with other dogs and is learning how to co-habitate with them while in foster care. As with strangers, Cirque will practice avoidance with a dog who gets too up close and personal, but has never taken it any further than an "ugly smile" and a warning growl. She even tolerated the amorous and obnoxious advances of my puppy with surprising grace and gave him plenty of opportunities to please go away. It would not be difficult to integrate her into a home with another well adjusted dog. However, Cirque can resource guard her items from other other dogs because she has never had to share them, so management and supervision is necessary. Her foster home is slowly introducing her to the concept of resource sharing in controlled circumstances. She should not go to a home with small children.

Cirque is very fond of stuffie toys and can amuse herself with one for some considerable time. However, this is no substitute for regular activity, and as Cirque is a high energy dog, she needs daily exercise. Cirque is fond of the game of fetch, and enjoys hiking and other activities where she can use her athleticism.

Cirque is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. She is crate trained, housebroken and has a good grasp of her basic obedience commands, including a reasonably good recall. She is an excellent dog for an active person who enjoys canine companionship, and is best suited to a sensible handler who has a calm and confident approach to dog handling. Cesar Milan followers need to not apply - Cirque does not need to be "dominated" she needs to be in a willing partnership with someone who understands dogs and knows how to get the most from their canine with positive means. Because she is reserved with strangers and other dogs, but excelling quickly in both areas in foster care, we know that her progression is best handled by someone who is not easily flustered by a dog who is not as happy-go-lucky as some other dogs can be. But a more loyal dog you would be hard pressed to find!! Cirque will positively delight the right person...maybe it's you!

We can be reached at bcrescue@shaw.ca . PLEASE NOTE: TDBCR does not

>

MAGGIE HAS AN ADOPTION PENDING AND IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST!

Maggie is a 7 month old female border collie who was sold as an Australian Shepherd mix, but appears all border collie to us in both appearance and behaviour. Maggie is a very wee girl, standing about 16" at the shoulder and weighing about 27lbs. She will not get much larger than this. She has a medium rough coat that may get fuller as she matures.

Although Maggie is small in stature, she is big in personality. Waggie Maggie is a happy, enthusiastic dog who is *always* ready for a game of soccer or frisbee, or a wrestle game with one of her foster siblings. Mags is best chums with my 11 month old male, but none of the other dogs take issue with her at all. She has been extremely appropriate with all my dogs, respecting their warnings if she is too forward and accepting any and all invitations to play. Off the property, she has been absolutely fine with all dogs she has met, though she can take issue with larger "lab type" dogs who are too 'in your face.' Overall, Maggie seems completely fine with all other dogs. In her previous home there were issues between her and the older female dog, and while we have not seen anything like this, for this reason she will not be placed in a home with another female dog. She should probably also not go to a home with a very small dog.

Maggie lived with a cat in her previous home and reportedly they were excellent friends. However, my cats do not like Maggie as she barks and lunges after them, which suggests she may be best in a cat-free home. Maggie has proven several times to not appreciate children, so she is absolutely not available to a home with children under about 15 years of age - she seems to like anyone who looks more like an adult. With adults, she is extremely friendly, and needs to learn not to jump up on everyone in greeting.

Maggie has a good grasp of basic obedience, but her recall needs a little work when she is distracted. She is good at fetch, though sometimes doesn't bring the ball all the way back. She loves to tug. In the house she can be trusted not to eat anything she shouldn't, does not counter surf and goes happily into her kennel at bed time for sleeping where she makes no noise. Maggie rides nicely in her crate in the car, vocalizing only when she thinks we have neared our destination, but she does not walk nicely on a leash and needs some work on not pulling. Maggie is completely housebroken, though she still asks to go out every few hours. She is a big fan of playing "attack" with the water hose.

Maggie's previous home put a good, solid foundation of socialization and obedience on Maggie and she has been a well loved, well cared for companion. She has no "baggage" to speak of. Maggie is a sensitive dog who does not respond well to harsh tones or corrections, and would do well in an R+ environment, with clear boundaries.

Maggie has fit in here so seamlessly it's as though she has always been here. She is an easy keeper and we all like her a lot - she has an excellent home with me, so if you apply for her you should be prepared to convince me that you can offer her something as good or better. We like Maggie too much to not be particular about her new home. I prefer to see Maggie placed in a home where she can play agility or otherwise do something meaningful, and more than just daily trips to the park. She is lightning fast, responsive and smart - an excellent agility candidate.

Before adoption Maggie will be spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and tattooed. Please remember she is NOT available to a home with kids and NOT available to a home with another female dog. She is available to a performance / agility home. If I sound extra picky, it's a testament to what an amazing dog Maggie is and the amazing home she deserves.

We can be reached at bcrescue@shaw.ca
